King Deluxe has been given the honour of presenting Julien Mier’s latest and greatest work, Shiny Silver Lining. This seamless EP shows what a master craftsman the Dutch artist has evolved into. It follows last year’s excellent Cascade Records release, Out Of The Clouds, and more recently a track on Ryan Hemsworth’s Secret Songs label. We changed a few words with him.

Independent Groove: Hi Julien!

Julien Mier: Hi.

Independent Groove: How long have you been working on this release?

Julien Mier: About 1 to 1/2 year.

Independent Groove: How would you describe the music genre of this EP?

Julien Mier: I don’t really care or think about genres, I find it too limiting. I enjoy making visual sceneries in my head, like a sonic film.

Independent Groove: It sounds really organic: how much of real instrument, or real life sample is there in your music?

Julien Mier: I record a lot of real objects like cutlery, cans, bottles and melodic instruments or tones I can find, and use it as if it was a sample so it’s a mixture.

Independent Groove: Out of 7 tracks, 4 don’t have any Beats, and you have really few rhythmic part. Why is that?

Julien Mier: All of the pieces have beats actually, it’s just not as dominant as most electronic music nowadays I guess. I think beats are kind of overrated these days either way. Producers and artists have to do something else for a while, there’s more to creating electronic music then only making beats all the time.

Independent Groove: Help your listeners: how do you think is the best way to listen to your music?

Julien Mier: I heard from friends and fans that they enjoyed listening to my music while traveling.

Independent Groove: About the Video of Sea of Decay, how did it all started? Did you have a vision of it, or you’ve been approached by “Waterballet”?

Julien Mier: Kamiel (Waterballet) is a good friend of mine, we used to live 10 minutes apart by bicycle in Amsterdam. Sea Of Decay is a reference to Nausicaä, a forest of fungus in the Ghibli movie, which it’s concept suits Kamiel his underwater visuals very well. We prepared, shot and edited the video together.

Independent Groove: Some last words?

Julien Mier: Take Care 🙂

Independent Groove: We thank you for your time and wish you much success.
